Nyayo Tea Zones Development Corporation (NTZDC) was established in 1986 under the State Corporation Act, Cap 466 through a Legal Gazette Notice No. 265 of 1986 (later amended by the Legal Gazette Notice No. 30 of 2002). The overarching mandate of NTZDC as per the Gazette Notice is conservation of forests and protection of the environment. The rationale of setting up Nyayo Tea Zones was to guard against encroachment of the forests; in this particular case the gazetted forests and trust lands. This goal to be done by providing buffer zones of tea and assorted tree species.
